Abstract
The objective of this research was to improve physical properties of rice hull, saw dust and wood chip as container media. To achieve these, the organic matters were ground by various methods and blended with recycled rockwool, then changes of physical properties were determined. Raw materials of rice hull and wood chip had higher total porosity (TP) and air space (AS) and less container capacity (CC) than control, 1 peatmoss + 1 vermiculite (v/v). Rice hull ground three times with Wiley, hammer or roller mill had 25.5, 8.5 and 49.3%o, respectively, in particles smaller than 1 §®. Wood chips ground three times with Wiley or hammer mill had 26.7 and 13.8% in particles smaller than 1 §®. Grinding in all methods resulted in decreased TP and AS and increased CC in rice hull. The CC of rice hull ground four times with roller mill was 64.7%, which was close to the control. Grinding of wood chips in all methods also resulted in decreased TP and AS and increased CC, but the increase in CC was less significant than that in rice hull. Increased CC were also achieved by blending ground rice hull and wood chip or raw saw dust with recycled rockwool. The rice hull ground 3 times with a hammer mill and blended with 50% rockwool (v/v) had 64.0% in CC and wood chip ground 3 times with the Wiley mill and blended with 50% rockwool had 63.0% in CC.
